SUMMARY:LGBTQ Healthcare Panel
DESCRIPTION:Please come to the Indivisible Pittsfield LGBTQ Group’s healthcare panel on Tuesday\, October 10th. \nWhat are the health-care concerns facing the LGBTQ community here in the Berkshires? Are competent and informed care providers readily available? What structures are currently in place to provide LGBTQ-friendly health care? Where are the gaps? How can we come together to secure the compassionate\, culturally sensitive health care we all deserve? \nYou are invited to be part of this important community conversation. Please mark your calendars and bring your questions. \nFacebook event

SUMMARY:Stand Out Against Gun Violence
DESCRIPTION:Come and protest with us at the roundabout in Williamstown against gun violence. Join us from 5:00 to 6:30 — whenever you can get there. Bring your friends\, bring your signs\, bring your voices. Bring it all. \n— \nOn Sunday night\, a gunman opened fire on a concert crowd in Las Vegas. He murdered at least 58 people and injured more than 500 others\, making the attack the deadliest mass shooting in American history. The victims join the voiceless thousands who have been the victims of gun violence this year. 46\,597 shootings in 2017. 11\,652 deaths. 545 injured or killed children. \nIt has to stop. \nIt is a simple and brutal fact that the easy availability of guns to everyone makes it more likely that someone who is disturbed or fanatical will be able to get a gun. More stringent gun conrol may not have been able to prevent any particular shooting\, includng the Vegas massacre\, but it would make them all less likely… and might help change a culture that blithely accepts dead children as the cost of a hobby. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/131074310971075

SUMMARY:Stanza & Resist: Community Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A community poetry reading held monthly. Navigating the stressful confines of a dark political landscape can take a heavy toll on the spirit. It is during these dire times that the creative arts play a very important role\, not only in fighting back but also in how we are able to mediate the impact it has on our souls. At Stanza & Resist our goal is to provide a space where you can speak your mnind and soothe you’re weary bones\, whether that be through joyful empowerment or rousing expressions of resistance. You do not have to be a poet or writer to participate! All that is required is that you have the passion to speak your mind. Creativity is a valuable tool and a process by which one can meditate on the trials and triumphs of the world. This monthly poetry reading is a communal gathering and creative space and therefore is not hosted by any specific organization. Local groups are welcome to make flyers and info available at during readings to be taken by attendees. All are welcome! \nFacebook event

SUMMARY:Meet Your 1st-Berkshire Candidates
DESCRIPTION:Activist group Greylock Together has invited the candidates for the vacant 1st-Berkshire seat in the Massachusetts House to come and speak about their candidacy. Everyone is invited to join us and hear each candidate make a brief pitch about how they would be the best to serve. As of right now\, we will hear from three of the declared candidates: Lisa Blackmer\, Stephanie Bosley\, and Kevin Towle. \nYou can come prepared! Over the course of the past couple of months\, Greylock Together has assembled a list of goals we wish to achieve on the local\, state\, and national level. Each goal is supported by a supermajority of our members. While some are not immediately actionable for a state representative\, we still think it’s important that our representative shares our goals and values. We have sent out a survey based on these goals to each candidate. Their responses are here: http://www.greylocktogether.org/survey-answers-1st-berkshire/ \nFacebook Event

SUMMARY:Greylock Together Book Group
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss “A Colony and a Nation” by Chris\nHayes. Marie will facilitate that conversation. We are looking for someone to bring the snacks\, so please let me know if you can do so. \nPlease send any book ideas along so I can add them to the ever-expanding list. Because of very close votes this last time for our September read (which includes two different books\, one very short)\, we have also chosen already for October. In August\, we will vote for our November book. I think we might want to consider spreading our reading out among categories of issues/concerns. There\nhad been a number of votes this last time for books having to do with climate change/environmental issues\, and someone mentioned that we should have a category of books on LGBT issues. I hope that part of our discussion might be about how we might focus our votes each time on certain categories so the voting\nchoices aren’t quite as overwhelming and unwieldy each month and so that we are exposed to a number of different issues on the activist agenda. Feel free to email me with your suggestions of how we might handle voting in the future. \nUpcoming dates and books: \nThursday\, August 24 — “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood (fiction)\nThursday\, September 28 — both Naomi Klein’s “No Is Not Enough: Resisting Trump’s Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need”(270 pp) AND Timothy Snyder’s “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century”(126 pp)\nThursday\, October 26 — “Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right” by Jane Mayer (464 pp)\nThursday\, November 30 (will be voted on in August)\nThursday\, January 4 (this will likely be a fiction read\, if we want to keep to\nthe idea of fiction every 4 months) \nRSVP:  Pam Wax at pwax@bcn.net

SUMMARY:Pittsfield's Fourth of July Parade--Join Four Freedoms Coalition
DESCRIPTION:This year’s parade theme is “Celebrating Our Heroes\,” so feel free to dress up as people you consider heroes (male or female) in American history. Wear red\, white and blue regalia if you’d and we welcome as many Uncle Sams and Statues of Liberty as possible! \nThe Four Freedoms Coalition invites you to march with them in this parade.  They will be meeting up at 9am at Spot #175 on Bartlett Ave near Broad Street. The parade begins at 10am at South Street and Housatonic Street\, and ends at Wahconah Park. Wear sunscreen\, bring water and DEFINITELY wear comfortable shoes!  Kids welcome and musical instruments too! We will be singing as we go. \nPARKING:  To avoid congestion\, the Parade Committee recommends that marchers park their cars near the entrance to Wahconah Park and take a shuttle bus (provided by the Parade Committee) to the starting point. The shuttle will operate from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. \nNOTE:  The “Parade Rules” state that “All groups…are expected to reflect the annual parade theme and/or an Independence Day theme in their parade entry. The parade is about community and our freedoms\, not a group or their cause. Therefore\, NO advocating\, opposing or depicting of any political\, religious or social issues.”

SUMMARY:Out In The Berkshires - A Conversation with the LGBTQ Community
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to join with members of the lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and intersex communities\, as we discuss what it means to be ‘out’ in the Berkshires. In rural communities\, it can be challenging to find access to education\, employment\, housing and healthcare. For members of the LGBTQ population the challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming. The sense of social isolation adds to the difficulty many LGBTQ individuals find in living in the Berkshires. \nWhere are the various LGBTQ organizations and support groups in the Berkshires? What are they doing to make our communities safer\, more inclusive\, and more supportive of minority populations? What are the ways LGBTQ individuals are finding to live openly and authentically? What are the challenges that lie ahead? And how can the community at large support the struggle for full inclusion and equality? \nPanelists will include representatives from the Elizabeth Freeman Center\, Berkshire Rainbow Seniors\, the Berkshire Trans Group\, the Live Out Loud Youth Project\, and others. Please join us for this important community conversation. Thursday\, June 22nd\, 6:30 – 8:30 pm\, at the Berkshire Athenaeum\, One Wendell Avenue\, Pittsfield\, MA. \nPresented by the Pittsfield Human Rights Commission. For more information\, please contact Drew Herzig – drewherzig@yahoo.com \nFacebook event
