SUMMARY:Greylock Together Book Group
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss “A Colony and a Nation” by Chris\nHayes. Marie will facilitate that conversation. We are looking for someone to bring the snacks\, so please let me know if you can do so. \nPlease send any book ideas along so I can add them to the ever-expanding list. Because of very close votes this last time for our September read (which includes two different books\, one very short)\, we have also chosen already for October. In August\, we will vote for our November book. I think we might want to consider spreading our reading out among categories of issues/concerns. There\nhad been a number of votes this last time for books having to do with climate change/environmental issues\, and someone mentioned that we should have a category of books on LGBT issues. I hope that part of our discussion might be about how we might focus our votes each time on certain categories so the voting\nchoices aren’t quite as overwhelming and unwieldy each month and so that we are exposed to a number of different issues on the activist agenda. Feel free to email me with your suggestions of how we might handle voting in the future. \nUpcoming dates and books: \nThursday\, August 24 — “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood (fiction)\nThursday\, September 28 — both Naomi Klein’s “No Is Not Enough: Resisting Trump’s Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need”(270 pp) AND Timothy Snyder’s “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century”(126 pp)\nThursday\, October 26 — “Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right” by Jane Mayer (464 pp)\nThursday\, November 30 (will be voted on in August)\nThursday\, January 4 (this will likely be a fiction read\, if we want to keep to\nthe idea of fiction every 4 months) \nRSVP:  Pam Wax at pwax@bcn.net

Wear red\, white and blue regalia if you’d and we welcome as many Uncle Sams and Statues of Liberty as possible! \nThe Four Freedoms Coalition invites you to march with them in this parade.  They will be meeting up at 9am at Spot #175 on Bartlett Ave near Broad Street. Wear sunscreen\, bring water and DEFINITELY wear comfortable shoes!  Kids welcome and musical instruments too! We will be singing as we go. \nPARKING:  To avoid congestion\, the Parade Committee recommends that marchers park their cars near the entrance to Wahconah Park and take a shuttle bus (provided by the Parade Committee) to the starting point. The shuttle will operate from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. \nNOTE:  The “Parade Rules” state that “All groups…are expected to reflect the annual parade theme and/or an Independence Day theme in their parade entry. SUMMARY:Out In The Berkshires - A Conversation with the LGBTQ Community
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to join with members of the lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and intersex communities\, as we discuss what it means to be ‘out’ in the Berkshires. In rural communities\, it can be challenging to find access to education\, employment\, housing and healthcare. For members of the LGBTQ population the challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming. The sense of social isolation adds to the difficulty many LGBTQ individuals find in living in the Berkshires. \nWhere are the various LGBTQ organizations and support groups in the Berkshires? What are they doing to make our communities safer\, more inclusive\, and more supportive of minority populations? What are the ways LGBTQ individuals are finding to live openly and authentically? What are the challenges that lie ahead? And how can the community at large support the struggle for full inclusion and equality? \nPanelists will include representatives from the Elizabeth Freeman Center\, Berkshire Rainbow Seniors\, the Berkshire Trans Group\, the Live Out Loud Youth Project\, and others. Please join us for this important community conversation. Thursday\, June 22nd\, 6:30 – 8:30 pm\, at the Berkshire Athenaeum\, One Wendell Avenue\, Pittsfield\, MA. \nPresented by the Pittsfield Human Rights Commission. For more information\, please contact Drew Herzig – drewherzig@yahoo.com \nFacebook event

Review Local Action Items\n*Energy Healing work will be available throughout the day by a certified Reiki\npractitioner as well.\nThis year\, communities across the Commonwealth will celebrate Race Amity Day after\nmany cities and towns have adopted welcoming resolutions\, ordinances and policies to\nbuild community cohesion and inclusion: Last month in the Berkshires\, Williamstown\,\nPittsfield and Great Barrington each voted and passed such local policies or Sanctuary\nCommitments — with Becket joining in late May as the most recent Berkshire town to\nadopt similar language. While the details of each policy are specific to the town\, they\neach echo the same ideals of fairness\, inclusion and community support. A statewide\nbill\, the Safe Communities Act\, is also currently being considered at the State House at\na June 9th hearing.\nGreat Barrington’s policy\, called a Trust Policy\, was adopted on May 1st during Town\nMeeting\, and local community members are invited to attend Race Amity Day in Lee as\na continuation of the region’s legacy of social justice and recent decision to adopt the\nTrust Policy. “Race Amity Day is in complete alignment with the intent of the Trust\nPolicy\,” said Gwendolyn Hampton VanSant\, founding director and CEO of Multicultural\nBRIDGE\, the organization the spearheaded the policy’s campaign and host of the Race\nAmity Day workshops. “It’s an important opportunity to connect with our friends and\nneighbors as we have important conversations on race\, and come together to advance\nequity and justice in our local communities.”\nGreat Barrington’s Trust Policy provides a broad framework to help ensure that all\nresidents living and working in the community are fully protected and supported by the\npolice and town government. The policy works to ensure fairness\, protect civil liberties\nand build transparency with the town and police — to the benefit of all community\nmembers\, regardless of race\, skin color\, national or ethnic origin\, gender\, sexual\norientation\, mental or physical disability\, immigration status\, religious or political opinion\nor activity\, or homed or homeless status.\nThe Trust Policy was initially drafted and filed by Gwendolyn VanSant\, CEO and\nfounding director of Multicultural BRIDGE\, with partners Berkshire Showing Up for\nRacial Justice\, Berkshire Interfaith Organizing\, and Lia Spillotes\, executive director at\nCommunity Health Programs (CHP).\n###\nAbout Multicultural BRIDGE\nMulticultural BRIDGE is a local nonprofit working in the Berkshires\, across the state and\naround the country to promote mutual understanding and acceptance among diverse\ngroups\, while also serving as a resource to local institutions and the community at large.\nBRIDGE serves as catalysts for change through collaboration\, education\, training\,\ndialogue\, fellowship and advocacy. SUMMARY:Voting 101: How to Promote Automatic Voter Registration
DESCRIPTION:In this one hour phone call\, we’ll go into detail about our Massachusetts campaign for Automatic Voter Registration\, as a way of looking at how to initiate a state-by-state campaign. Passing a law is intricate and challenging but it’s not rocket science! Come hear about our action plan and learn how YOU can begin to lay the groundwork for passing this game-changing legislation in your state. I’ll even tell you about our mistakes! \nWe’ll also go look at ERIC\, Electronic Registration Information Center\, which is the best chance we have of displacing Cross Check. (If you don’t know what Cross Check is\, and need some depressing news to fill your weekend\, watch The Best Democracy Money Can Buy.) THE GOOD NEWS IS that Pew Charitable Trust developed this replacement\, which 21 states have signed onto to cross reference voters between states\, and clean up our messy voter rolls! (When you know about Cross Check\, ERIC looks all the more wonderful by comparison. And it is not that expensive to deploy!) \nNumber to call in: (515) 739-1537 \nCode to enter: 922472 \nAnd if you missed the first call\, Voting 101: and How We Fix It – which is a compendium of our voting vulnerabilities\, here’s the recording. https://www.freeconferencing.com/playback.html?n=%2Fstorage%2FsgetFC%2FOH4pQ%2FaIrDYqhttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.freeconferencing.com%2Fplayback.html%3Fn%3D%2Fstorage%2FsgetFC%2FOH4pQ%2FaIrDYq
